The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team bolstered their frontcourt in a major way on Friday, securing a commitment from Michigan transfer Malick Kordel. Standing at an imposing 7-foot-2 and 275 pounds, the native of Oberhausen, Germany, arrives to address a clear need for size and presence in the paint.
Kordel's announcement came just hours after fellow Wolverine transfer, guard Winters Grady, also committed to the U. In a social media post celebrating his decision, Kordel simply declared, "Let's get it!"
While his statistical impact was limited on a deep, championship-caliber Michigan squad—averaging 1.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in just 4.1 minutes per game across 14 appearances—his efficiency was notable. Kordel shot an impressive 57% from the field, showcasing his potential as a finisher around the rim.
His basketball journey is a fascinating one. Originally a handball player, Kordel only switched to basketball in 2021. After playing internationally, he arrived in the U.S. as an unrated prospect before his stint at Michigan, highlighting a rapid development curve that the Gophers hope continues in Minneapolis.
With the additions of Kordel, Grady, and previously committed Nolan Groves, Head Coach Ben Johnson has actively reshaped his roster via the transfer portal. The Gophers still have two scholarship spots remaining, with point guard reportedly topping the list of positional needs as the offseason continues.
