Arizona needs a new quarterback.

The Arizona Cardinals' quarterback room has a new vacancy sign after moving on from Kyler Murray, officially putting the search for a new franchise signal-caller at the top of the offseason agenda. While the 2026 draft class might not be overflowing with elite prospects, one name keeps popping up in connection with the desert: Alabama's Ty Simpson.

According to ESPN's veteran draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., the Cardinals' clearest path to securing Simpson involves some draft-night maneuvering. Kiper's latest mock draft proposes a strategic trade with the Miami Dolphins. In this scenario, Arizona would send their second-round pick (No. 34) and a third-rounder (No. 65) to Miami in exchange for the Dolphins' first-round selection at No. 30 and a later third-round pick (No. 94).

This move isn't just about moving up four spots; it's about securing a critical contractual advantage. "It's getting late in Round 1," Kiper explains, highlighting the value of a first-round selection. By jumping back into the first round ahead of the New York Jets at No. 33, Arizona would secure the valuable fifth-year option on Simpson's rookie contract, providing crucial long-term flexibility for a potential franchise QB.

For the Dolphins, the deal offers a chance to amass more premium picks. "The Dolphins would then have five total picks in the top 75 and still be able to get an impact player early on Day 2," Kiper notes, making it a potentially appealing swap for both sides.

The Cardinals wouldn't be forced to throw Simpson into the fire immediately, but the intention would be clear: develop him as the long-term cornerstone. Kiper acknowledges the Cardinals could wait until 2027 but sees a unique opportunity. "Why not take a swing at the most important position in the game?" he asks, pointing to Simpson's appealing traits—accuracy, mobility, and intelligence—highlighted by a 28-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his final college season.

While Simpson's relative lack of starting experience (15 games) is a noted concern, Kiper's projection frames this potential trade as a calculated, high-upside gamble for an organization in need of a new direction under center. It’s the kind of bold move that can define a franchise for years to come.
