Angel Reese is undeniably one of the WNBA's brightest young stars—but she's also one of its most polarizing figures. Now, another high-profile, frequently criticized female athlete is stepping up to defend her, offering a fresh perspective on the narrative that's followed Reese since before she even turned pro.

Even before entering the league, Reese was cast as the villain to Caitlin Clark's rising stardom, thanks to their epic showdowns in the NCAA Tournament. That rivalry carried over to the WNBA, where Reese has continued to play the foil as Clark becomes the face of the league. But being cast as the antagonist hasn't been easy on Reese, and her frustration has occasionally surfaced in press conferences.

Now, as she begins a new season with a new team, Reese has hinted at a different approach: staying quiet. During an appearance on First Lady Michelle Obama's podcast, Reese revealed she'd rather take fines than face what she described as difficult or aggressive reporters.

"I'll take a fine before I have to go media and feel like my back is against the wall," she said.

That bold stance earned praise from another sports icon who knows a thing or two about being in the spotlight: U.S. Women's National Team legend Megan Rapinoe. On her podcast A Touch More, Rapinoe came to Reese's defense, applauding the WNBA star's decision to protect her peace.

"I think Angel is a really great example of her taking her power back," Rapinoe said. "Angel was set up as a villain before she was even in the WNBA, and now she's making it clear that she's gonna protect her peace. The media landscape is changing rapidly in women's sports, and of course, the W, as always, is out front."

Rapinoe was quick to note that Reese isn't refusing to speak to the media outright—she's simply being selective about when and how she engages. In a league where narratives are often written before players step on the court, Reese is rewriting her own story, one quiet moment at a time.
