Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane has issued a rallying cry to his squad: salvage a turbulent season by lifting the FA Cup trophy against Manchester City this Saturday at Wembley.

The Blues are mired in a difficult campaign, sitting ninth in the Premier League and winless in their last seven league matches. With Champions League qualification now all but out of reach, the FA Cup final represents a golden opportunity to turn despair into triumph.

McFarlane, 40, has stepped into the hot seat twice this season—first replacing Enzo Maresca in January, then taking over from Liam Rosenior three months later. Despite his interim tag and lack of full-time managerial experience, he has already guided Chelsea past Leeds in a tense semi-final at Wembley and earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Pep Guardiola's City in January.

But history is not on Chelsea's side. The club has lost FA Cup finals in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and hasn't lifted the trophy since beating Manchester United in 2018—their last domestic silverware. Moreover, City have dominated this rivalry, with Chelsea winless in their last 13 meetings since that famous Champions League final victory in 2021.

"Our recent league form has been way below the standard we expect," McFarlane admitted to reporters on Thursday. "But this is the FA Cup final—a massive competition. At a club with this history and expectation, there's always pressure to win every game. You have to accept it and embrace it."

For McFarlane, walking out at Wembley will be a career-defining moment. "I've managed a few games at this level, but nothing of this magnitude," he said. "I'll try to stay as level as possible. The process stays the same."

Despite the daunting task ahead, McFarlane insists his squad believes. "They've got the belief they can beat anyone. We just know we have to be the best version of ourselves."
