Calum McFarlane cut a dejected figure in his first press conference as Chelsea boss, his expression mirroring the frustration of his predecessors after a disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest.

In what was his debut match at Stamford Bridge, McFarlane watched his side get dismantled by a rotated Forest team, with boos echoing from the stands at both half-time and full-time. The new manager didn't hold back in pinpointing where it all went wrong.

"The first 15 minutes were nowhere near the level we needed to be," McFarlane admitted. "The early goal was a sucker punch, and we never really recovered. It was a 3v1 at the back post. We know Forest like to cross there, we know their No.9 peels to that spot—and we should have defended it better. It's really disappointing."

The defending in that critical moment was simply not good enough—a recurring theme this season. Individual errors from the backline have become all too familiar, and when the team concedes, the spirit to fight back seems to evaporate.

Joao Pedro, who also spoke after the match, offered little explanation for the team's flat performance. Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher didn't hold back his criticism of Chelsea's project, though he noted it's "good for football" to see the struggles.

For Chelsea fans, this loss raises more questions than answers. McFarlane has a mountain to climb, and it starts with shoring up a defense that continues to let the team down at the worst moments.
