Belmont softball ace Maya Johnson is making it clear: the Bruins aren't just happy to be in the NCAA Tournament—they're coming to win.
Following the release of the 64-team bracket, Johnson sat down with ESPN's Holly Rowe and was asked why Belmont could be this year's Cinderella story in the Tuscaloosa Regional. Her answer? Bold, confident, and backed by research.
"We wouldn't be the first mid-major to beat Alabama this year," Johnson said, surrounded by her teammates. "We've beaten SEC teams. We want everyone to be scared of us, and we want them to know our name. We're going in fully expecting to be able to win."
That kind of fire is exactly what makes March Madness—and now NCAA softball—so thrilling. Johnson isn't just talking, either. She enters the tournament leading the nation in ERA (0.70) and strikeouts (361), and her 1,170 career strikeouts are the most among all active players in the country.
The Bruins and the Crimson Tide could meet as early as May 16 at Rhoads Stadium, either in the winner's bracket or a double-elimination showdown. For a mid-major program, that's a tall order—but Johnson's numbers suggest Belmont has the ace to make it interesting.
Whether you're a fan of the underdog or just love elite pitching, this is a storyline worth watching. And if Johnson has anything to say about it, Belmont won't be going home quietly.
