The Dallas Mavericks have made another major front-office move, announcing the hiring of Mike Schmitz as their new general manager on Friday. Schmitz, formerly an assistant GM with the Portland Trail Blazers, steps into the role just three days after the team introduced Masai Ujiri as president and alternate governor.
This appointment fills the position previously held by Nico Harrison, who was fired in November—nine months after trading superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that has since backfired on the franchise. The Mavericks have stated that Schmitz will oversee day-to-day operations and ensure strategic alignment within the basketball operations department.
The timing of the hire also raises questions about the future of Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi, who served as co-interim GMs after Harrison's dismissal. The duo notably orchestrated the trade of Anthony Davis—the centerpiece Dallas received in the Dončić deal—to the Washington Wizards.
Schmitz and Ujiri share strong ties to Africa, with Schmitz having worked on youth basketball development in Ujiri's native Nigeria and serving as an assistant coach for the Ugandan national team. This shared background could signal a new direction for the Mavericks' global scouting and player development efforts.
Before joining the Trail Blazers in 2022, Schmitz spent five years as a draft analyst at ESPN, where he built a reputation for his keen eye for international talent. In his own words: "I have tremendous respect for Masai, this ownership group and the vision they have for the future of the franchise. I'm excited to get to work alongside the talented people already in place and help build a championship-caliber organization."
For Mavericks fans, this move represents another step in reshaping the front office after a tumultuous season—and a clear signal that the team is looking to rebuild its identity both on and off the court.
