When President Donald Trump posed a direct question about the USMNT's chances at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, head coach Mauricio Pochettino didn't hesitate with his reply.
"Of course," the former Tottenham boss said, recalling the conversation during a recent appearance on 'Stick to Football.' "Yes, why not? Because it's all about belief."
With the World Cup less than 50 days away, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are preparing to co-host the tournament this summer. But excitement has been tempered by soaring ticket prices—final tickets reportedly start at a staggering $10,000 on the resale market—and inconsistent performances from the USMNT, who struggled in recent friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.
Pochettino, brought in by U.S. Soccer to maximize the team's potential on home soil, faces enormous pressure to deliver results. The USMNT hasn't reached the World Cup quarterfinals since 2002, and their last semifinal appearance dates all the way back to 1930.
While the Argentine coach has stopped short of committing to a specific target, he's hinted that a deep run is within reach. Pointing to Morocco's inspiring semifinal charge in Qatar and South Korea's stunning 2002 campaign, Pochettino believes the USMNT can follow a similar path.
"Look at Morocco in Qatar, it's all about belief," he said. "Or South Korea in Japan. I think there are plenty of examples."
For fans and players alike, the message is clear: hope remains alive, and Pochettino is betting big on belief.
