Manchester United fans, we finally have some clarity on Matthijs De Ligt's injury situation—and while the news is bittersweet, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

The Dutch defender underwent successful surgery to address a persistent back problem that has sidelined him since November. After months of uncertainty and minimal updates under interim manager Michael Carrick, the club has confirmed that De Ligt is expected to be fully fit for the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

"Since November, I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football," De Ligt said in a club statement. "I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible."

At 26 years old, the former Ajax and Bayern Munich star was a key figure in United's backline early in the season before the injury derailed his momentum. The timing is especially tough—this setback means he'll miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup—but the positive update on his recovery is a welcome relief after such a long stretch of radio silence.

De Ligt joined United in the summer of 2024 from Bayern Munich for a fee of around €45 million, with potential add-ons. When fit, he's been heavily involved, racking up 56 appearances across all competitions, including 13 Premier League starts before going down in November.

For now, it's all about patience. But for a player of De Ligt's caliber and determination, you can bet he'll be back stronger than ever when the 2026-27 season rolls around.
