Atlanta Falcons president of football operations Matt Ryan is heading into training camp this summer with some uncertainty at the quarterback position, but he has a much clearer vision for one of the team's newest weapons: wide receiver Jahan Dotson.
Dotson joined the Falcons as a free agent after a quiet stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he managed just 37 receptions over two seasons. That underwhelming production followed a first-round draft selection by Washington in 2022, leaving many to wonder if the former Penn State standout would ever live up to his billing. His move to Atlanta didn't exactly set off fireworks—especially on an offense already loaded with stars like Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson.
But Ryan sees something more. During an appearance on 680 The Fan Monday, the former MVP quarterback pointed to Dotson as a player with untapped potential.
"Of course, you've got to have these premier players," Ryan said. "But if you're going to be successful long-term and you're going to be consistent year in and year out, depth is paramount. So when you add a guy like Jahan Dotson, who I'm excited about, I think there's untapped potential with him. And some of it is just the situations he was in early on and some of the places that he was. So, excited about what he can do."
Dotson will need to prove Ryan right. The Falcons also brought back familiar face Olamide Zaccheaus and drafted explosive rookie Zachariah Branch in the third round, creating a crowded wide receiver room. With training camp on the horizon, Dotson will have to shine on the practice field to carve out a meaningful role—and make Ryan's words look like more than just preseason optimism.
