Matt McCarty made it look easy at Quail Hollow on Thursday. Fresh off four consecutive top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour, the rising star carded nine birdies en route to an 8-under 63 to grab a one-shot lead over Sungjae Im at the Truist Championship. The round was cut short by rain, leaving Im and several others to finish up on Friday morning.

For McCarty, it was a masterclass in consistency and confidence. But for Rory McIlroy, the day was a different story—one of frustration, patience, and a touch of dark humor.

Making his first start since winning his second straight Masters three weeks ago, McIlroy looked uncharacteristically out of sync on a course where he's historically dominated. The four-time Quail Hollow champion, who holds multiple tournament scoring records here, opened with 17 consecutive pars. Yes, you read that right—17 straight. He finally broke the streak with a birdie on the ninth hole, sarcastically thrusting both arms in the air as if to say, "Finally."

"I was thinking I can't remember the last time I played a round of golf and didn't have a birdie," McIlroy said. "I thought my chance had passed me by, but nice to see one putt go in there."

That birdie was anything but routine. On the par-4, 539-yard ninth, McIlroy missed the fairway but somehow lifted a 9-iron from the left rough 194 yards over the trees, landing just 15 feet from the hole. He finished with a 1-under 70, seven shots off the lead.

For context, McIlroy has played 986 rounds on the PGA Tour. Only seven times has he failed to make a single birdie—the last being at the 2024 Masters. Thursday's round wasn't that bad, but it was close enough to remind everyone that even legends can have off days.

Behind McCarty, the leaderboard is packed with talent. Defending champion Sepp Straka is among five players at 5-under, joined by Kristoffer Reitan, Nicolai Hojgaard, Harry Hall, and Nick Taylor. Cameron Young, celebrating his 29th birthday, sits four shots back alongside Tommy Fleetwood. Young was also on his final hole when the rain hit, so he'll have to wait to finish his round.

As for McCarty, he's proving that his recent hot streak is no fluke. With nine birdies in one round at a demanding venue like Quail Hollow, he's sending a clear message: he's here to compete. The question now is whether he can hold off a chasing pack that includes some of the biggest names in golf—and whether McIlroy can find his rhythm before it's too late.
