At 52 years old, Hughes is best remembered as one of the most dominant welterweights in MMA history. Over a storied 13-year career, he competed in 54 professional fights—25 of them inside the UFC—where he defeated legends like Georges St-Pierre, BJ Penn, and Royce Gracie. His toughness and grit made him a fan favorite and earned him a rightful place among the sport's all-time greats.

But since retiring in 2011, Hughes has faced battles far tougher than any he encountered in the cage. The latest setback came in the form of a shocking social media post. In good spirits, the Illinois native shared a photo from a hospital bed, revealing the tip of his middle finger had been amputated. While details of the accident remain scarce, Hughes managed to lighten the mood with his signature sense of humor.

"Luckily, God's been real good to me," he wrote on Instagram. "He left me nine more to work with."

In June 2017—nearly six years after hanging up his gloves—Hughes was in a horrific accident when a train struck his pickup truck at a rural crossing in Illinois. The crash left him in a 19-day coma and caused a severe traumatic brain injury.

Since then, he has undergone regular therapy to rebuild his balance, coordination, and cognitive function.
