Ben Sanderson savours a "perfect day" after his incredible spell led Northants to an innings win over Worcestershire.

Ben Sanderson delivered a spell for the ages, powering Northamptonshire to their first victory of the season with a stunning innings win over Worcestershire at Wantage Road.

The veteran seamer was simply unplayable, ripping through the Worcestershire batting lineup with figures of 6-7 in just 29 balls. His final match haul of 11-109—including 7-31 in the second innings—marked a career-best performance that left teammates and fans in awe.

"It's probably one of my better spells," said the 37-year-old, reflecting on a near-perfect afternoon. "The ball change helped, the lights coming on, overcast conditions—it felt beautiful coming out of my hand. Everything I tried seemed to work, and you need that bit of luck as well. We talk about banging away at the top of off stump, and I can't do any more than that."

This victory was long overdue for Northants, marking their first win since June 2025 against Middlesex. Sanderson, who made his debut for the club in 2016, now sits just five wickets shy of 450 in first-class cricket—a testament to his enduring quality and consistency.

"It was a perfect day—I don't think we could have done anything better," Sanderson added. "We've dominated probably three games out of four, and that victory's been coming for a while. It's much needed and well earned by everyone."

The win has injected fresh belief into the Northants camp. "The confidence just grows," Sanderson explained. "With this win under our belts, if we keep playing how we are, we should get a couple more victories in this last little block of games."

Head coach Darren Lehmann was quick to praise his star performer but also highlighted the broader team effort. "You need exceptional performances like Ben Sanderson's, but our batters have gone to another level this year, which gives our bowlers more time to get 20 wickets."

That batting resilience was evident from the season opener against Lancashire, where Northants found themselves reeling at 50-6 in the first innings. They fought back to salvage a draw with their last-wicket pair at the crease—a result that Lehmann believes laid the foundation for this breakthrough win.

With back-to-back away fixtures against Derbyshire and Gloucestershire on the horizon, Northants will look to build on this momentum. If Sanderson's golden arm and the team's rising confidence are anything to go by, more celebrations could be just around the corner.
