After another bye week—and for the second time in a month—New Mexico United is finally back in USL Championship action. The team takes on El Paso Locomotive FC at Isotopes Park on Wednesday at 6:55 p.m., with coverage on New Mexico 50 and FM-101.7.

Here’s what you need to know before kickoff.

The Rivalry Heats Up
El Paso hasn’t lost to New Mexico since March 22, 2025. While there have only been three meetings since then, Locomotive has made them count—winning two in dominant fashion. On May 3, 2025, El Paso cruised to a 3-0 victory. Then came a 4-0 thrashing in the U.S. Open Cup on April 1, tied for United’s worst home loss ever. Goals from Alvaro Quezada, Alex Méndez, Rubio Rubín, and Eric Cavillo sealed the deal, with three coming after halftime.

In between those two matches? A 2-2 draw in last year’s U.S. Open Cup third round—though El Paso advanced 4-1 on penalties. Someone had to win.

Rare League Action
Between the U.S. Open Cup, the USL Cup, and multiple bye weeks, United has had few chances to earn points in league play. Wednesday’s match is just the second USL Championship contest for New Mexico in the last month. The other was a 3-0 loss at Phoenix Rising FC on April 11.

The good news? Fans get a two-for-one special this week. United hosts Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, giving the team a rare chance to build momentum.

Goal-Scoring Woes vs. Firepower
El Paso leads the USL in goals (17) and conversion rate (25%), despite ranking just 12th in total shots (90). Rubio Rubín is tied for third in the league with five goals, while Amando Moreno (four) and Alex Méndez (three) add serious depth. That’s a potent attack that United’s defense will need to contain.

On the flip side, New Mexico has scored just five goals in league play—tied for 23rd. The team ranks dead last in shot attempts (56) and sits near the bottom in conversion rate (12%). Finding the net has been a challenge, and Wednesday’s test won’t make it easier.

Checking the Standings
United sits 10th in the Western Conference with six points, ahead of Lexington SC and Monterey Bay FC. El Paso is third with 13 points, trailing only San Antonio FC (16) and Orange County SC. Every point matters as the season heats up.

Wednesday’s match is a chance for New Mexico to turn the tide—and get back on track in league play.
