The 2025 Masters will forever be remembered as the moment Rory McIlroy silenced the doubters, finally slipping on the green jacket and completing the career Grand Slam. But amid the history-making triumph, it was a tiny star who stole the show: his four-year-old daughter, Poppy.
During the beloved Par 3 Contest, Poppy stepped up and drained a 25-foot downhill putt, sending the Augusta crowd into a frenzy. The heartwarming scene had McIlroy and fellow Irish pro Shane Lowry celebrating like they'd just won the tournament themselves.
Now, in a special episode of the "New Heights" podcast, McIlroy sat down with hosts Travis and Jason Kelce to relive that magical week—and to offer some priceless advice for golf dads everywhere. With Jason's six-year-old daughter, Wyatt, picking up the game, McIlroy shared his fatherly philosophy.
"I don't want Poppy to associate golf with me leaving," McIlroy explained. "Just make it fun, whatever that means. Let them drive the golf cart. Go play golf, then go get ice cream. Keep it positive."
He then revealed a struggle every golf parent knows too well: Poppy will happily take a 40-minute lesson from a pro, but can't handle five minutes of putting tips from Dad.
Jason Kelce, fresh off his role as ESPN commentator at the 2026 Masters, couldn't resist showing McIlroy video of Wyatt's first time on the range—ripping drives while sporting pink rain boots. McIlroy studied the swing like a coach.
"First thing I did with Poppy was work on the grip. Looks like she's got a decent one. Pretty good. Some potential," he said with a smile.
McIlroy returns to action this week at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, where he'll look to build on his Masters momentum. But for fans of the game—and parents of future golfers—his real legacy might just be showing that the best swing advice comes with a side of ice cream.
