Even for a five-time major champion like Brooks Koepka, the smallest equipment detail can make a world of difference, especially at a place as demanding as Augusta National. After his opening round at the 2026 Masters, Koepka discovered a critical error: his Titleist GT3 driver was set to the wrong specification.
Modern drivers like the GT3 offer adjustable settings to fine-tune ball flight, allowing players to dial in for a neutral, fade, or draw bias. Koepka's preferred setting is the standard "A1" position. However, during a post-round range session on Thursday, he realized his club had been set to "B1," a flatter lie angle that can subtly alter performance.
"No one noticed it," Koepka admitted. The impact, however, was noticeable in the numbers. Data Golf showed he lost 0.41 strokes off the tee on Thursday. After correcting the setting, he gained 0.86 strokes driving the ball on Friday, hitting two more fairways and shooting a 69 to improve to a 72-69 start.
Despite the self-inflicted technical hiccup, Koepka remained upbeat about his form in his first major since joining LIV Golf. "Ball striking has been really good this week," he said, while acknowledging his short game needed sharpening. The adjustment served as a perfect reminder of why having your gear perfectly tuned is non-negotiable at the highest level, where every single stroke is precious.
