In a thrilling extra-inning showdown, the Kansas City Royals edged out the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Saturday night, proving that baseball is a game of moments—and Michael Massey seized his.
With the game tied in the 10th inning, Massey started as the automatic runner on second base. Showing both speed and savvy, he swiped third before racing home on Maikel Garcia's sacrifice fly to center field off Mariners reliever Cooper Criswell (1-1). It was a textbook display of small-ball execution that left Seattle fans stunned.
The Royals' comeback was fueled by sheer determination. Down 2-1 in the ninth inning, they faced Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz. Salvador Perez sparked the rally with a leadoff single, and pinch-runner Lane Thomas advanced to second on a balk. Then, Jac Caglianone delivered a game-tying single to center that got past Julio Rodríguez and rolled to the wall, allowing Thomas to score and sending the game into extras.
Seattle had taken control early, with Josh Naylor driving in Rodríguez with an RBI single in the first inning. But Kansas City answered in the third, as Kyle Isbel and Garcia ripped back-to-back doubles to knot the score at 1-1.
That was all the Royals could muster against Mariners starter Emerson Hancock, who was utterly dominant. Over seven innings, he allowed just six hits and no walks while striking out a career-high 14 batters. It was a masterful performance on a night when Seattle honored one of its all-time greats, retiring the number of legendary pitcher Randy Johnson.
The Mariners regained the lead in the fifth when Leo Rivas scored from third on a wild pitch by Royals starter Seth Lugo. Lugo battled through six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out six. Luinder Avila provided two scoreless innings of relief, keeping Seattle's bats quiet and setting the stage for extra innings.
Lucas Erceg slammed the door in the 10th, retiring the side to earn his ninth save of the season. Matt Strahm (1-0) picked up the win, while Criswell took the loss.
The series continues Sunday, with Seattle sending right-hander Luis Castillo (0-2, 6.35 ERA) to the mound against Kansas City lefty Kris Bubic (2-1, 3.74 ERA). With both teams hungry for momentum, expect another nail-biter under the Pacific Northwest lights.
