Manchester United are gearing up for a crucial summer transfer window, with major squad investments on the horizon. At the top of the Red Devils' wishlist is a new midfielder, as INEOS look to secure a long-term replacement for the departing Casemiro. After splashing over £200 million on four players last summer, United may need to dig deep again—potentially adding multiple midfielders, especially with Manuel Ugarte's future hanging in the balance.

To fund this summer's activity, United must balance the books. Securing Champions League qualification could bring in around £70 million, while reports suggest INEOS hope to raise another £100 million through player sales. But there's another potential cash source: sell-on clauses from former academy stars. One name that could impact United's budget is Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood was once the crown jewel of United's academy—a two-footed, pacey finisher who dazzled fans with his skill. He seemed destined for Old Trafford greatness until off-field issues derailed his career. After a loan spell at Getafe, he made a permanent move to Marseille in summer 2024 and has since exploded onto the Ligue 1 scene. This season, the 24-year-old has notched 25 goals and 10 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

His red-hot form has sparked rumors of a summer exit from the Stade Velodrome, with reports suggesting he remains unsettled in France. And with former Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi now at Tottenham Hotspur (since March 2025), whispers of a Premier League return have grown louder. According to TEAMtalk, however, Greenwood is unlikely to return to England this summer, leaving Spurs and other suitors to look elsewhere.

For United, Greenwood's potential sale—triggering a sell-on clause—could provide a welcome financial boost. But for now, the focus remains on rebuilding the squad, with midfield reinforcements leading the charge.
