The New Orleans Saints have made a significant move to strengthen their secondary, signing former Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. to a one-year "prove-it" contract following the 2026 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old defender, a former third-round pick, is ready to make his mark after a challenging year on the sidelines.
Emerson suffered a torn Achilles during team workouts last summer, which forced him to miss the entire 2025 season. However, in an encouraging update for Saints fans, he confirmed to beat reporters on Thursday that he has been fully cleared physically for over a month and expects no restrictions when training camp kicks off in July.
Standing at six-foot-two, Emerson brings both size and promise to a restructured Saints secondary that is looking to fill the gap left by Alontae Taylor, who departed in free agency. Before his injury, Emerson showed steady improvement in Cleveland, recording 63 tackles, 18 stops, and two pass deflections in 2024. His best season came the year prior, when he notched a career-high four interceptions.
Typically, players recovering from major injuries start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but Emerson appears poised to avoid that designation. He is set to fully participate from day one, building chemistry with fellow young cornerbacks Quincy Riley and Kool-Aid McKinstry.
When asked about his role, Emerson told reporters that he primarily discussed playing boundary cornerback with the team but emphasized his willingness to do whatever it takes to get on the field. During the 2024 season, he played 829 total snaps, with 731 coming at wide cornerback—a position where he clearly feels most comfortable.
For a Saints team looking to bounce back, Emerson's health and versatility could be a game-changer in a competitive NFC South.
