The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Utah Mammoth, 5-1, to eliminate them in six games and advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

For years, Mitch Marner carried the weight of playoff disappointment on his shoulders. But on this night in Salt Lake City, he finally laid those demons to rest.

The Vegas Golden Knights punched their ticket to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a commanding 5-1 victory over the Utah Mammoth, closing out the series in six games. And at the heart of it all was Marner, the man whose arrival in Vegas last summer signaled a new era of championship ambition.

It was July 1, 2025, when the hockey world shook. Marner, long the subject of intense scrutiny in Toronto, was traded to the Golden Knights and immediately signed an eight-year extension. The message was clear: Vegas was going all-in. The pressure in Sin City might not match the glare of the hockey Mecca, but expectations were sky-high nonetheless.

In Game Six, Marner answered the call in emphatic fashion.

The Golden Knights had made a habit of scoring in the dying moments of periods during this series, and they struck again late in the first. Brett Howden, riding a personal hot streak with his fourth goal in three games, pounced on a rebound off the boards and fired past a scrambling Karel Vejmelka to open the scoring.

Then, with less than a minute left in the second period, Marner delivered a moment of pure magic. After a dominant cycle from his line with Howden and Mark Stone, Marner found a sliver of space and unleashed a blistering slap shot into the top corner. The two-goal cushion felt like a knockout punch heading into the final frame.

Utah showed signs of life early in the third when Kailer Yamamoto buried a tidy goal, but it proved to be nothing more than a last gasp. Just two minutes later, Colton Sissons pounced on a rebound from Brayden McNabb's shot to restore the two-goal lead.

From there, the Mammoth's frustration boiled over. A penalty to Logan Cooley gave Vegas' lethal power play a chance, and Marner made them pay with another goal. Cole Smith added the exclamation point with an empty-netter, sealing the series victory.

For Marner, this wasn't just a win. It was redemption. The Golden Knights are moving on, and their star player is finally shedding the playoff ghosts that haunted him for so long.
