Miami has made a drastic move.

The Miami Marlins have made a stunning move behind the plate, shaking up their catching corps in a way that signals both opportunity and urgency.

In a decision that caught many off guard, the Marlins are optioning Agustin Ramirez to Triple-A and calling up top prospect Joe Mack. The news was first reported by Marlins insider Craig Mish on Sunday, with Mack expected to join the big league club on Monday.

Ramirez, known more for his bat than his glove, had a breakout 2025 season, smashing 33 doubles and 21 home runs while also swiping 16 bases. That power-speed combo helped offset his defensive shortcomings. But through 30 games this season, Ramirez has managed just two homers, and his diminished production, combined with the emergence of catcher Liam Hicks, made the move less risky for Miami.

Enter Joe Mack, a 23-year-old left-handed hitter and the Marlins' first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Williamsville East High School in Buffalo, New York. Mack is widely regarded as a strong defensive catcher, and his offensive game has steadily improved as he's climbed the minor league ladder.

At Triple-A Jacksonville this season, Mack posted a .766 OPS across 24 games, with two doubles and three home runs. He also showed impressive plate discipline, drawing 20 walks against 22 strikeouts. When he makes his debut, he'll bring a polished approach and a reputation for handling a pitching staff.

The big question now is how the Marlins will get Mack into the lineup every day. With Hicks capable of playing first base or serving as the designated hitter, Miami has a clear path to let Mack handle the catching duties while keeping Hicks' bat in the order. It's a flexible arrangement that could pay off as the season progresses.

For Marlins fans, this move signals a vote of confidence in their young talent and a willingness to make tough calls early. Mack's debut is one to watch—he has the tools to be a cornerstone behind the plate for years to come.
