When a team's offense is struggling and needs a hero, sometimes the most unexpected player steps into the spotlight. For the New York Mets, that man has been Mark Vientos, and he's making sure the spotlight stays firmly on him.
Vientos has been on a tear during the Mets' current road trip, and Friday night was no exception. The young slugger wasted no time making an impact, crushing a third-pitch slider from Ryne Nelson deep to left-center for his fifth home run of the season—a 401-foot blast that put the Mets on the board first.
After a quiet stretch from the Mets' lineup, Vientos stepped up again when it mattered most. Following a gutsy eight-pitch inning from Devin Williams, Vientos cashed in the ghost runner with a first-pitch go-ahead double, shifting momentum back to New York. Carson Benge followed with a big insurance run, and Tobias Myers sealed the deal with a clean 1-2-3 inning to close out the victory.
"It felt pretty good," Vientos said after the game. "I felt like the at-bats I put together were pretty good, I'm just happy that I was able to come through in both of those spots."
This hot streak is a welcome sight for Mets fans, especially after a rough spring training and slow start to the regular season for the right-handed hitter. Over his last 13 games, Vientos is hitting .261 with three doubles, three homers, five runs scored, 10 RBI, a .333 on-base percentage, and an impressive .855 OPS. He's finally looking like the player the Mets hoped he'd be when they called him up.
Manager Carlos Mendoza has taken notice. "The more he gets the results, the more you're going to see that," Mendoza said. "When he gets going he gets locked in and mentally it helps him big-time—he's a very good hitter and it's good to see him getting results."
For Vientos, the key is consistency. "I feel good right now for sure," he added. "Just gotta keep stacking the days and continue to be consistent."
If he keeps swinging the bat like this, the Mets' offense might not be shorthanded for long. And for fans looking to channel that same energy, a fresh jersey or batting gloves might be just the ticket to feel like you're part of the action.
