The Seattle Mariners welcomed back a key veteran piece on Friday, reinstating utility man Rob Refsnyder from the paternity list. To make room on the active roster, the club placed outfielder Patrick Wisdom on the 10-day injured list.
Refsnyder's brief absence earlier in the week had opened the door for Wisdom, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma after tearing up minor league pitching with a league-leading nine home runs. His big-league return, however, was short-lived; Wisdom struck out in his only plate appearance during Tuesday's loss to the Padres before the injury sidelined him.
In more significant pitching news, right-hander Bryce Miller was back at T-Mobile Park, marking a positive step in his recovery. Miller, who began the season on the IL with an oblique injury, is set to begin a rehab assignment with Tacoma on Saturday. The plan is for him to throw roughly two innings or 30 pitches as he works his way back.
For Miller, it's been a frustrating run of injuries after a previously durable start to his career. "It was weird because I went a long time without any injuries," Miller reflected. "Through high school, through college, through early pro ball. Didn’t have anything. And then last year, on and off the IL."
His impending return creates an interesting dilemma for the Mariners' rotation. While George Kirby, Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, and All-Star Bryan Woo have firm holds on starting jobs, Emerson Hancock has excelled as Miller's replacement, posting a stellar 2.27 ERA over four starts. General manager Justin Hollander acknowledged the coming "log jam," indicating the team will have a difficult but welcome decision to make once Miller is fully built up and ready to rejoin the staff in a few weeks.
