The Mariners' roster shuffle continues as the team navigates the early season grind, this time with a family-first move that brings a fresh arm to the big leagues.
Left-hander José A. Ferrer has been placed on the paternity list, opening the door for right-handed pitcher Domingo González to be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. The timing is fitting: Ferrer, who was acquired in a December trade that sent catcher Harry Ford to Atlanta, worked out of a bases-loaded jam on Sunday in Chicago before heading home to be with his wife for the birth of their child. He will miss most, if not all, of the upcoming series in Houston.
For González, this call-up represents a shot at his Major League debut, a milestone that would make him the third Mariner to achieve it this season, joining fellow righties Alex Hoppe and Nick Davila. The 26-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Braves last August and survived the offseason roster churn before being optioned to Tacoma. He has been impressive in his first taste of the Pacific Coast League, posting a 1.80 ERA and 2.60 FIP over 15 innings, with just two walks and a stellar 50% ground ball rate. Seattle is González’s third organization—he was signed by the Pirates out of the Dominican Republic in 2018—and there's always a special energy around a debut.
Ferrer’s absence is a notable one. He has been a workhorse for the Mariners' bullpen, leading the team in appearances (21) and innings (20) through the first six weeks. While he has dealt with some tough BABIP luck, his 1.80 FIP and 2.42 xFIP tell the story of a dependable arm. With Andrés Muñoz scuffling and Matt Brash and Gabe Speier sidelined, Ferrer has worn multiple hats—closing games, getting crucial outs against lefties, and covering multiple innings. We at Lookout Landing send our congratulations to Ferrer and his family on the arrival of their newest fan.
