The Seattle Mariners are navigating a rough patch in their 2026 campaign, with the recent injury to star catcher Cal Raleigh casting a cloud over the clubhouse. But at 21-23, the team is far from out of the playoff picture. With the August 3rd trade deadline looming, don't be surprised if the Mariners emerge as serious buyers—and one name on their radar could be the perfect fit for both their lineup and their defensive depth.

According to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, the Mariners have been linked to a handful of potential targets, including Cincinnati Reds utilityman Spencer Steer. "This is a roster that would benefit from a Spencer Steer- or Willi Castro-type who can play virtually any position on the diamond while also hitting the occasional home run," Miller wrote. That kind of versatility is exactly what Seattle needs to round out a solid, but not yet elite, roster.

Steer, 28, is enjoying a strong season at the plate, posting a .782 OPS with a .259 batting average and nine home runs over 147 at-bats. That's quality offensive production from a player who can also handle multiple positions. So far in 2026, he's logged time at second base, third base, right field, left field, and first base—and he's even played shortstop earlier in his big-league career. For a Mariners team looking to stay flexible and competitive, Steer offers a rare blend of pop and defensive versatility.

The five-year MLB veteran is under team control through the 2028 season, making him more than just a rental. While the trade cost would be notable, Steer would provide long-term value for Seattle's core. The only potential snag? The Reds are still in the thick of the National League Wild Card race, which could make them hesitant to part with a key contributor. But if the Mariners are serious about contending, Steer is the kind of player who could make all the difference down the stretch.
