Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has been through a rough patch at the plate, but his latest slump-busting strategy is one for the books. After going hitless in 10 straight games—an 0-for-38 stretch that marked the longest hitless streak of his career and of any MLB player this season—Raleigh decided to take a page out of teammate Logan Gilbert's playbook for some unconventional mojo management.
Following another tough night in Houston on Monday, Raleigh showered in his full uniform. That's right: cleats, pants, jersey, and all. It might sound like a rookie mistake, but for a veteran slugger looking for any edge, it was a calculated move to wash away the bad juju. And it worked.
On Tuesday night, Raleigh broke the streak with a sharp line-drive single to center field in the seventh inning, sparking a 10-2 Mariners victory over the Houston Astros. He added another single in the ninth, finishing the game with two hits and a much-needed confidence boost. "Logan gave me some good advice to wash off the bad mojo or juju from the baseball gods," Raleigh told the Associated Press. "So yeah, it worked. He was right, so I got to give him credit where credit's due."
For Mariners fans, seeing Raleigh back in form is a welcome sight. Last season, he was a powerhouse, leading the American League with 60 home runs and 125 RBIs and finishing as the AL MVP runner-up. This year has been more of a grind, with just seven homers and 18 RBIs through the first 40 games. But if Tuesday night is any indication, the "Big Dumper" might be ready to heat up just in time for summer.
Whether it's a superstitious shower or a new batting glove, sometimes you just need to shake things up to get back in the groove. For Raleigh, a little soap and water—and a lot of grit—were all it took.
