The Toronto Maple Leafs have a decision to make this summer, and it revolves around a young forward who could be a key piece of their future—or a trade chip for something bigger.
Matthew Knies, the talented winger who was kept off the market before the March NHL trade deadline, is now reportedly drawing interest from at least one team. According to insider David Pagnotta, the Chicago Blackhawks have set their sights on Knies and would like to add him to their roster.
While Pagnotta’s report doesn’t suggest a deal is imminent, it does indicate that Chicago could circle back to explore a trade for Knies at some point. That leaves Toronto with a classic hockey conundrum: hold onto a promising young player, or see what the market will bear.
For the Maple Leafs, the untouchable list is short. Auston Matthews and William Nylander are the only two players the team reportedly wouldn’t trade unless a request came from the player themselves. Knies sits just below that level—a guy you’d love to keep, but not one you’d refuse to move for the right offer.
And what an offer the Blackhawks could make. Chicago holds the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a prime asset that could tempt Toronto into a deal. The Maple Leafs already own the No. 1 pick, likely to be used on Gavin McKenna, and adding another top-five selection could supercharge their rebuild or retool.
Of course, Knies himself could still be a solid part of Toronto’s core for years to come. The Leafs might simply choose to keep him and build around their young talent. But with the draft lottery now behind them, the chatter around a potential Knies trade is only going to heat up this summer.
Whether Toronto pulls the trigger or not, one thing is clear: the hockey world will be watching closely as the Leafs decide what kind of team they want to be.
