Manny Machado made history on Saturday, smashing his 200th home run in a Padres uniform and the 375th of his career, as San Diego defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 at Petco Park. The milestone blast came in the eighth inning off reliever Matt Svanson, sealing the win and adding another chapter to Machado's storied career—he previously hit 162 homers with the Baltimore Orioles and 13 during a half-season stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ty France also went deep for the Padres, launching a solo shot to center field in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. That set the stage for Fernando Tatis Jr., who delivered the go-ahead two-run single later in the same frame, giving San Diego a 3-1 lead. Randy Vásquez (4-1) earned the win, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six over five solid innings.
The Cardinals struck first in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Nathan Church, but the Padres' bullpen held firm. Mason Miller, the dominant closer who has been nearly unhittable this season, worked a tense ninth inning. He walked two batters and saw Yahel Pozo reach on a strikeout in the dirt, but escaped the jam by freezing JJ Wetherholt with a 101 mph fastball for his fourth strikeout of the frame. Miller has been scored on in just one of his 18 outings and leads the majors with 12 saves in as many chances.
St. Louis trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the eighth when Iván Herrera doubled down the left-field line off reliever Adrian Morejon, scoring Wetherholt. But Machado's historic homer in the bottom half restored the two-run cushion.
Cardinals starter Dustin May (3-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits while striking out seven in six innings. San Diego will look to split the four-game series on Sunday, sending Walker Buehler (2-2, 15.64 ERA) to the mound against St. Louis right-hander Kyle Leahy (4-3, 4.93 ERA).
