The race for Atalanta's midfield dynamo Ederson dos Santos just got a whole lot more interesting. For months, Atletico Madrid looked like the frontrunners, with the Brazilian seemingly destined for La Liga. But now, Manchester United have stormed into the lead, shaking up the summer transfer window.

Ederson, 26, is entering the final year of his contract with the Serie A side, putting Atalanta in a tricky spot. They're eager to cash in now rather than lose him for free next summer. Atletico Madrid had been circling since January, with Sporting Director Mateu Alemany even making a move—but when a deal couldn't be struck, they pivoted to sign Obed Vargas and Rodrigo Mendoza as midfield cover.

According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto, the Red Devils have now surged ahead in the pursuit. Atletico had already agreed personal terms with Ederson on a contract worth around €4 million per year, hoping to lock him down before Premier League clubs caught wind. But that plan has backfired. United have swooped in with a better offer, dangling €4.5 million annually to lure the midfielder to Old Trafford.

Here's where it gets complicated: neither club has actually agreed a fee with Atalanta yet. The Italian club is holding firm on a €45 million valuation—a steep price for a player with just one year left on his deal. That same sticking point derailed Atletico's winter efforts, and it's now the main obstacle for United too. Moretto suggests that a resolution will only come once Atalanta lowers their demands.

For Atletico, this means they'll need to up their game on both fronts—matching United's wage offer and finding a way to meet Atalanta's price—if they want to bring Ederson in as competition for Johnny Cardoso, alongside Pablo Barrios and veteran Koke Resurreccion in midfield. For United, it's a chance to add a powerful, box-to-box presence to their engine room. The ball is in Atalanta's court, but the drama is just heating up.
