Manchester United's pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has reportedly cooled, with the club's initial strong interest now "receded." The Italy international was once considered a top target for the Red Devils as they plan a major midfield overhaul this summer.

Tonali, 26, had been high on United's shortlist, viewed as one of the best available players in his position and fitting the club's recruitment model of proven Premier League talent. The midfielder is also open to leaving St James' Park, especially with Newcastle set to miss out on European football next season.

However, according to The Telegraph, several factors have dampened United's enthusiasm. Chief among them is Newcastle's hefty asking price, reportedly exceeding £80 million. Additionally, there are internal reservations at Old Trafford regarding Tonali's previous suspension for betting breaches, which has introduced a risk factor the club is wary of.

With Tonali's pursuit stalling, United have shifted focus to alternative targets. West Ham's Mateus Fernandes and Atalanta's Ederson have emerged as potential options, offering different profiles and price points. The club is also monitoring Southampton's Shea Charles, a product of Manchester City's academy who impressed on the south coast. United's Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, previously worked with Charles and is said to be an admirer, viewing him as a depth addition alongside two higher-profile midfield signings this summer.

As the summer transfer window heats up, United's midfield rebuild remains a priority, but it seems Tonali's blockbuster move to Old Trafford is no longer a sure thing.
