Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for West Ham United's standout midfielder, Mateus Fernandes, as the club kickstarts a major midfield overhaul.

The 21-year-old Portuguese talent has been one of the few bright spots in a challenging season for the Hammers, who face the real threat of Premier League relegation. Should they drop down, a fire sale could follow—and several top-flight clubs are ready to pounce.

According to reports from The Telegraph, United's scouts have been tracking Fernandes closely all season, with their interest "intensifying" in recent weeks. The midfielder is widely expected to leave West Ham if they go down, though the club is keen to keep him.

Interestingly, United passed on a chance to sign Fernandes last year when Southampton were relegated, allowing West Ham to snap him up for an initial £38 million (plus £4 million in add-ons). Now, even if the Hammers avoid the drop, holding onto the player could prove difficult as he's "being discussed by a number of clubs."

Fernandes sits high on United's transfer list as they plan a midfield rebuild. With Casemiro set to depart and Manuel Ugarte—who has struggled since his £42 million move from PSG in 2024—likely to be offloaded, the Red Devils are targeting as many as three new midfielders this summer. Reports suggest the club could spend up to £150 million on the position.

Other names linked to Old Trafford include Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Sandro Tonali, as United look to refresh their engine room for the seasons ahead.
