Manchester United's focus has shifted after securing Champions League qualification for next season. With that major milestone checked off, interim manager Michael Carrick now has the freedom to rotate his squad as they prepare to face Sunderland.
The Red Devils clinched their spot in Europe's elite competition with a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. That win not only sealed Champions League football with three games still to play but also marked United's first Premier League double over Liverpool in a decade. It was a statement performance that effectively ended their two-year exile from the competition, ensuring they cannot finish lower than fifth this season.
For Carrick, the result was a huge boost and further solidified his credentials as the club's next full-time manager—even though an official decision on his future has yet to be announced. He's determined to finish the campaign strongly, and while the primary goal is accomplished, he's also hinted at giving opportunities to some of United's fringe players during these final three matches.
"I think every player in the squad has been absolutely fantastic, I have to say," Carrick said at his pre-Sunderland press conference. "Some have played a lot more than others, and I understand from a professional and a playing point of view it can be difficult, but the togetherness and the support that the players have shown, certainly each other, is great to see."
He also acknowledged the challenge of managing training intensity with fewer matches to play. "It's what we need within the group and that's part of the challenge of doing a lot of training and not having as many games as we would have liked. It's the balance that we've made the most of really, so coming into these games it's something we're aware of. I think it's really something we're keen on playing well and still trying to get good results as well."
