Manchester City continued their relentless Premier League charge with a commanding 3-0 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening. Goals from Jérémy Doku, Erling Haaland, and Omar Marmoush ensured the Bees left empty-handed despite a resilient first-half performance.
The match began with City asserting early pressure. Doku tested Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher within the first five minutes, cutting inside from the wing and unleashing a powerful shot that the keeper parried away. The rebound was swiftly cleared by Keane Lewis-Potter, but the warning signs were clear.
Brentford, however, showed they weren't just there to defend. A trademark long throw-in from Michael Kayode caused chaos in the City box. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma misjudged his rush, and Kevin Schade nudged the ball toward goal, only for Matheus Nunes to clear it off the line. It was a let-off for the hosts, and the Bees grew in confidence.
The tension escalated midway through the first half when Schade raced onto an Igor Thiago flick-on, bearing down on goal. Nunes stretched out a leg and brought the forward down, sparking Brentford appeals for a foul and a potential red card. Replays, however, showed the City defender got a stud on the ball, sparing him further punishment.
City's attacking trio continued to probe. Bernardo Silva and Haaland both had chances created by the electric Doku, whose footwork and crosses kept the Brentford defense on edge. Silva's outside-of-the-boot effort flew high and wide, while Haaland headed over the bar from a pinpoint delivery.
The deadlock was finally broken in the second half. Doku, once again the architect, curled a stunning opener past Kelleher to give City the lead. The goal lifted the home side, and they doubled their advantage soon after when Haaland scrambled the ball home from close range. With the game sealed, Marmoush added a third in stoppage time, slotting home to cap a dominant display.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews made two changes for the trip, bringing in Kristoffer Ajer and Aaron Hickey for Sepp van den Berg and Dango Ouattara. Kevin Schade also marked his 100th Premier League appearance for the club, a milestone in an otherwise tough evening.
For City, this was another statement of intent in the title race. With Doku's creativity, Haaland's ruthlessness, and a defense that held firm, Pep Guardiola's side look every bit the champions they aspire to be. As for Brentford, they'll take heart from a solid first half but know they need to turn promise into points.
