Manchester United's defensive woes have deepened ahead of a crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea this Saturday. Defender Harry Maguire will be unavailable for the trip to Stamford Bridge after receiving an additional one-match ban from the Football Association.

The suspension stems from an incident during United's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth last month, where the 33-year-old England international was shown a red card for conceding a penalty. The FA has now imposed a further ban and a £30,000 fine for "improper conduct" directed at fourth official Matt Donohue as Maguire left the pitch.

According to the official written reasons, Maguire was alleged to have shouted, "You're a joke. You're all a ******* joke," towards the official. Maguire, in his defense, stated he made a general comment like "it is a ******** joke" but denied directing insults at any specific match official. He did, however, acknowledge his behavior was inappropriate and offered an apology.

The regulatory commission considered a two-match ban but reduced it to one, citing mitigating factors including Maguire's acceptance of the charge. This additional suspension compounds United's defensive crisis, as Maguire was already serving a ban for the initial red card.

To make matters worse for manager Michael Carrick, United will also be without fellow centre-back Lisandro Martinez. Martinez was sent off in Monday's 2-1 defeat to Leeds for violent conduct, leaving a significant gap in United's backline for a high-stakes London derby against a top-four rival.
