Manchester United's defensive woes have deepened ahead of a crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea this Saturday. Key defender Harry Maguire will be absent from the trip to Stamford Bridge after receiving an additional one-match suspension from the Football Association.

The ban stems from an incident during United's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth last month, where Maguire was shown a red card for conceding a penalty. The FA has now imposed a further punishment for "improper conduct" directed at the fourth official, Matt Donohue, as Maguire left the pitch. According to the official report, Maguire shouted, "You're a joke. You're all a ******* joke," though the player denied directing the insult at any specific official.

In addition to the ban, Maguire has been fined £30,000. The regulatory commission noted that while a two-match suspension was considered, mitigating factors—including Maguire's acceptance of the charge and his apology—resulted in the one-match penalty. This setback is significant for United, as Maguire had been a consistent starter, featuring in the previous ten league matches before his initial suspension.

United's defensive crisis doesn't end there. Centre-back Lisandro Martinez will also miss the Chelsea match after receiving a red card for violent conduct in Monday's defeat to Leeds. Manager Michael Carrick has labeled the decision against Martinez as "one of the worst" he's seen and indicated the club may appeal. With fellow defender Matthijs de Ligt also potentially unavailable, United faces a major test of their squad depth against a top-four rival.

This situation leaves Carrick with serious selection headaches at the back, forcing him to rely on less experienced options for a high-stakes London derby. For fans, it's a frustrating twist in a challenging season, highlighting how quickly momentum can shift in the Premier League.
