
Apr. 21—HURON — Mitchell High School's Maddie Childs recorded her first under-par round of the season on Tuesday at the Huron Quadrangular, picking up a second-place individual finish for the Kernels at Broadland Creek Golf Course.
The MHS senior shot a round of 1-under-71 in the event, four shots behind individual champion Olivia Braun, of Aberdeen Central, who fired a 5-under-67 to win by four shots.
Childs, who shot a high school career-best 70 in a round last season, posted back-to-back birdies at the par-4 No. 4 and the par-5 No. 5 holes to start her round at 2-under-par. She had a bogey on hole No. 7 and then finished with 11 consecutive pars, including an even-par-36 on the back nine to cap her score of 71.
For Mitchell, Londyn Hajek shot a career-best 77, finishing 5-over-par and in sixth place, while Anna Eliason shot 79, good for seventh place. Brynlee Sabers was 10th with a round of 83, Mia Larson was 11th with a round of 87 and Emma Reinesch shot 101 and finished in 16th place.
Aberdeen's Emma Dohrer was tied for second with Childs, also shooting 1-under-71. Aberdeen Central's Chloe Vikander (75) and Kyley Wirebaugh (76) also landed in the top-five among individual finishes.
The Golden Eagles shot 289 to claim the four-team event title, finishing 1-over-par as a team. Mitchell shot 310, Miller was in third with 363 and Huron was in fourth place (454) to round out the team totals.
Mitchell also had junior varsity golfers in action on Tuesday. Kate Schutz was the top Kernel golfer and second overall, shooting a 93. Elliot Smith shot a 96, Presley Meyerink shot 103 and Rorey Koch shot 122 for MHS. Aberdeen's Carli Withers had the top JV individual score with a 92.
Mitchell is in a quadrangular on Thursday, April 23 at Yankton against Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Washington. The Kernels play at 10 a.m. at Fox Run Golf Course.
