The dream of playing professional basketball is staying home for Amaya Battle. The Minnesota Lynx announced Thursday they have signed the standout University of Minnesota point guard to a training camp contract, allowing her to launch her pro career in the same city where she became a college star.
Battle headlines a group of six players invited to Lynx training camp, which also includes Liatu King, Ra Shaya Kyle, Jade Masogayo, Saylor Poffenbarger, and Sakima Walker. These athletes will compete for the final roster spots ahead of the 2025 WNBA season.
Battle’s senior season was nothing short of legendary. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 11.1 points and 7.5 rebounds while leading the Gophers on a thrilling run to their first Sweet 16 appearance in nearly two decades. She cemented her legacy with a iconic buzzer-beater to upset Ole Miss in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.
Her impressive college career placed her in elite company. She finished as one of only two active players with over 1,530 points, 775 rebounds, and 595 assists. The other player on that short list? Olivia Miles—the Lynx's No. 2 overall draft pick and Battle’s new teammate and potential mentor.
At training camp, the Hopkins High School alum will battle for a backup point guard role behind Miles. She’ll have a powerful ally in her corner: Lynx assistant coach Lindsay Whalen. Whalen, a Minnesota icon herself, originally recruited Battle to the Gophers during her tenure as head coach and guided her through her freshman season, creating a unique and valuable connection as Battle fights for her WNBA roster spot.
