Dan Lydiate, the former Wales and British and Irish Lions flanker, is set to leave the Dragons this summer to take on a full-time coaching role with the Wales national team. The 72-cap legend, known for his devastating chop tackles and relentless work rate, will join Steve Tandy's backroom staff permanently after impressing in interim roles during the autumn internationals and Six Nations.

Lydiate, who made his Wales debut in 2009 and played all three Tests for the Lions on their triumphant 2013 tour to Australia, will focus on contact skills and work alongside incoming defence coach Pete Murchie. This move marks the next chapter for a player who transitioned from the pitch to coaching seamlessly, first as a player-coach and then as a full-time member of the Dragons' management team after retiring last summer.

Head coach Tandy couldn't hide his excitement: "It's great to have Dan join us full-time. He's done a superb job around the contact area and with the mindset of the group. He has a natural coaching style and a huge amount to offer. I think he and Pete will complement each other brilliantly in camp, and Dan's influence will be key in developing players outside of international windows too."

The timing is perfect for Wales, with a blockbuster summer schedule ahead featuring matches against the Barbarians, Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa. Lydiate will join a growing list of full-time coaching staff under Tandy, including Danny Wilson, Matt Sherratt, and former Glasgow coach Pete Murchie. He'll finish the season with the Dragons, where he's worked closely with defence coach Dale MacLeod, before linking up with the national team.
