Álvaro Cortés isn't your typical Barcelona breakout story. While fans have marveled at the rapid rise of talents like Pau Cubarsí, the 21-year-old defender has taken the scenic route to the first team. This week, his patience paid off when he finally earned his senior debut against Alavés at Mendizorroza—a moment five years in the making.

As the current captain of Barça Atlètic, Cortés brings a maturity forged through adversity. Barcelona first spotted him in Aragón back in 2021, when youth directors Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira watched him face Sabadell. What caught their eye wasn't just his skill, but his veteran-like composure. "He already had the build and bearing of a fully formed player," Altimira recalled, noting the same poise Cortés showed in his recent debut.

But the path wasn't smooth. After a stint with Juvenil B, Barcelona sent him on a crucial loan to CF Damm for the 2022-23 season. There, former Argentina international Pablo Rotchen took the elegant ball-player and transformed him into a physical defensive force. "Leaving Barça was tough for him," Rotchen admitted, "but it was the turning point." The coach focused on the 'animal' side of the game—getting stuck in and owning the penalty area—turning Cortés into a more complete defender.

Just as he was gaining momentum under Rafa Márquez, a nasty injury in October 2023 nearly derailed everything. Yet Cortés fought back. Óscar López, who coached him briefly, describes him as an intense, aggressive defender who uses top-tier spatial awareness to compensate for not being a pure speedster. "If Barça keeps betting on him," López insists, "they'll have a center back for a long time."

Albert Sánchez, who took over the reserve team, agrees—highlighting how Cortés breaks lines with his passing, adding another dimension to his game. For Hansi Flick, Cortés represents the latest project to get excited about: a player who took the hard road, but arrived ready.
