Luka Doncic isn't hiding his frustration. The Lakers star, sidelined since April 2 with a hamstring injury, opened up Wednesday about the difficult road to recovery—and the emotional toll of watching his team battle in the playoffs without him.
"It's very frustrating. I don't think people understand how frustrating it is," Doncic told reporters. "All I want to do is play basketball, especially this time. It's the best time to play basketball."
The six-time NBA All-Star revealed he traveled to Spain for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, a treatment designed to accelerate his eight-week recovery timeline. "Everybody knows that it's one of the best countries to do that," Doncic explained. "We talked with the Lakers doctors, so everybody agreed for me to go there."
Each injection required four days of rest in between, which meant an extended stay in his home country. "I know and trust lots of people in Spain that I used to work with before," he said. "I needed four days in between every shot. I did it four times, so that's why I stayed longer."
Doncic has resumed running but hasn't yet reintroduced contact drills. He's balancing his eagerness to return with the hard lesson of patience. "It's a tough one for me. I've come back from injuries too soon before, and it wasn't the best result," he admitted. "This is the first time I have a hamstring injury. It's not the same like other injuries. You have to be very careful. I'm doing everything to come back."
The Lakers are in the thick of a Western Conference Semifinals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, dropping Game 1 108-90 on Tuesday. For Doncic, watching from the sideline has been a gut-wrenching experience. "I'm very proud of them, but it's been very tough to watch," he said.
Game 2 tips off Thursday night in Oklahoma City—and while Doncic won't be in uniform, his determination to rejoin the fight is stronger than ever.
