The Los Angeles Lakers' season ended with a whimper on Monday night, swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs. But the most crushing blow didn't come on the court—it came from Luka Doncic's postgame comments.
For Lakers fans, the "what if" scenario has been haunting since Doncic went down with a hamstring injury on April 2. The six-time All-Star missed the entire Thunder series, and his absence was felt in every possession. Doncic's ability to create his own shot in isolation, his pick-and-roll mastery, and his clutch gene in late-game situations could have made this a much different series. Even if the defending champion Thunder were the favorites, Doncic's presence would have at least kept things competitive.
After the season-ending loss, Doncic addressed reporters with a heavy heart. "I know some people wanted me back, but obviously I wasn't close to clearing," he said. "If I could be out there, I would be, 100%. Everybody in that room knows this is really tough. This is the best time to play basketball."
His words hit hard for a franchise that had legitimate championship aspirations after a strong first-round win over the Houston Rockets. There was real optimism that Doncic would return after missing just a game or two. Instead, the reality is sobering: the Lakers' season was effectively over the moment Doncic got hurt, even if nobody wanted to admit it.
Doncic did reflect on the positives, praising the chemistry he built with Austin Reaves and LeBron James. "Playing with AR and LeBron, it's an incredible experience. Two great players, and it was really fun to share a court with them."
For Lakers fans, that shared court time was too brief. And as they watch the Thunder advance to the Western Conference finals, they're left wondering what could have been—and hoping for a healthier sequel next season.
