Some people continue to think that Lakers superstar Luka Doncic is overrated.

Even the game's brightest stars can't escape the spotlight—or the scrutiny. Luka Dončić, the Lakers' dazzling Slovenian superstar, just wrapped up a regular season that would make any player envious: he led the NBA in scoring with 33.5 points per game, while also posting 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.6 steals. On paper, it's the kind of stat line that screams "MVP candidate."

But in the world of basketball, stats don't always silence critics. Over the past year or two, whispers about Dončić's game have grown louder. Some point to his defense as a weak spot. Others argue that his jaw-dropping numbers are "empty calories"—impressive on the surface, but not translating into the kind of winning impact expected from a true franchise cornerstone.

That chatter gained official traction when The Athletic polled 161 NBA players, asking them to name the most overrated player in the league. Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün topped the list, but Dončić wasn't far behind. He tied for fifth place, receiving 3.7% of the votes—a reminder that even the elite have their doubters.

It's worth putting this in perspective. Dončić has yet to win an NBA championship, reaching the Finals just once in his seven seasons. But context matters: during his six-and-a-half-year run with the Dallas Mavericks, he rarely had a supporting cast strong enough to contend for a title. Now wearing purple and gold, he's found more help in Los Angeles—though many still question whether the Lakers' roster is truly championship-caliber.

Still, before Dončić suffered a hamstring strain on April 2, the Lakers were hitting their stride. They won 16 of their final 18 games heading into that tough loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, taking down elite teams like the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and Houston Rockets along the way.

The playoffs have only underscored his value. Without him, the Lakers' offense has sputtered dramatically. During the regular season, L.A. averaged 116.3 points per game and shot a league-best 50.2% from the field. In seven playoff games without Dončić? That number has plummeted to just 99.6 points a game. Whether you call him overrated or underappreciated, one thing is clear: when Luka's not on the floor, the Lakers just aren't the same.
