The Los Angeles Lakers face a pivotal offseason decision regarding Austin Reaves, who is expected to opt out of his contract and test free agency. After another postseason that fell short of expectations, some Lakers fans are open to trading the rising guard—especially in a blockbuster deal for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who the Bucks are reportedly entertaining trade offers for.
However, Luka Doncic has made his stance crystal clear. According to a report from The Athletic's Dan Woike and Sam Amick, Doncic wants to keep playing alongside Reaves—so much so that he has told the Lakers he would not want Reaves included in any trade package for Antetokounmpo. Beyond their close friendship, Doncic believes Reaves is a vital long-term piece next to him. The report notes that Doncic would strongly prefer a team built around him and Reaves, alongside whatever other star the Lakers might acquire.
This loyalty is significant, especially as the Lakers are expected to explore Antetokounmpo trade scenarios this summer. But the question remains: does the two-time MVP even want to come to Los Angeles?
Reaves took another step forward during the regular season, averaging 23.3 points on 49% shooting from the field and 36% from three-point range, along with 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. However, after returning from an oblique strain, his playoff numbers dipped to 20 points per game on 40.7% shooting overall and just 25.7% from beyond the arc.
While Reaves has proven to be a crafty scorer and playmaker, his relatively slow foot speed and lack of elite athleticism by NBA standards can be exposed against quicker defenders. That said, his chemistry with Doncic and his ability to step up in big moments make him a valuable asset the Lakers may want to keep—especially if their superstar point guard has his say.
