When Luka Doncic finally addressed the media for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain, Lakers fans hoping for a miraculous playoff comeback felt a collective sigh of disappointment. The superstar point guard didn't mince words about his chances of returning to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in their Round 2 series.

Doncic sustained a Grade 2 hamstring strain on April 2 against the Thunder—the very same team the Lakers are now fighting in the playoffs. And while the Lakers managed to keep Game 1 competitive for stretches, they ultimately fell 108-90, giving OKC a 1-0 series lead. What makes that loss sting even more? The Thunder won despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander having one of his worst playoff outings ever, finishing with just 18 points and seven turnovers as the Lakers threw double and even triple teams at him.

LeBron James turned back the clock to keep things interesting, and for a moment, the NBA's largest fanbase dared to dream. If the Lakers could hang tough without Doncic, imagine what they'd look like when the MVP candidate returns, right?

Not so fast.

"I'm just doing everything I can, like I said, every day I'm doing stuff I'm supposed to do," Doncic told reporters. "The doctors said eight weeks at the beginning of the first MRI. So I'm just going day by day and I feel better every day."

That eight-week timeline is the first official word on his recovery—and it's a sobering one. Doncic has barely started running, and with the playoff schedule running games every other day, the window for a superhero return is closing fast. The optimism that once filled the air has all but evaporated, leaving Lakers fans to wonder if their championship hopes will have to wait another year.
