Dončić's availability moving forward against the Thunder remains unclear beyond Game 1. But being ruled out a day ahead of time is generally not a good sign of a quick return.

In a significant blow to the Lakers' playoff hopes, superstar Luka Dončić has been officially ruled out for Game 1 of their second-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder—and the decision came a full day before tip-off.

Dončić continues to battle a Grade 2 hamstring strain, an injury that has already kept him on the sidelines for the final six games of the regular season and the entirety of Los Angeles' first-round victory over the Houston Rockets. While the Lakers have managed to survive without their floor general so far, this early ruling doesn't bode well for a swift return.

Being ruled out 24 hours in advance is typically a red flag for a player's availability in the near term. It suggests the injury is still limiting his ability to practice or test it at game speed, leaving his status for the rest of the series uncertain.

The Lakers showed resilience in Round 1, advancing despite missing both Dončić and Austin Reaves (who sat out the first three games). However, that series win came against a shorthanded Rockets squad that was without Kevin Durant for five of six games. Now, facing a hungry Thunder team in the second round, Los Angeles will need to dig even deeper to stay competitive without their biggest star.
