After a storied career spanning nearly two decades, Aston Villa midfielder Lucy Staniforth has announced she will hang up her boots at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
The 33-year-old's journey in professional football began in remarkable fashion, making her senior debut for Sunderland at just 16 years old. From those early days in the northeast, Staniforth's path took her through several of the Women's Super League's most notable clubs, each stop adding to her legacy.
Following her time at Sunderland, Staniforth moved to Lincoln before a stint at Bristol City. A pivotal chapter came when she joined Liverpool, though fate had a cruel twist in store—an ACL injury forced her to miss the entirety of the 2014 WSL season, the very campaign in which the Reds claimed the league title. She returned for one more year at Liverpool before embarking on a journey that saw her represent Sunderland again, then Birmingham City, and eventually Manchester United.
In the 2022/23 season, Staniforth made her way to Aston Villa, where she has continued to bring her wealth of experience to the midfield. This campaign has seen her make nine appearances for the Villans, who have just two matches remaining on their schedule.
Beyond her club career, Staniforth proudly earned 17 caps for the England national team, scoring two goals and playing a role in the Lionesses' 2019 World Cup campaign. Her retirement marks the end of an era for a player who has been a steady presence in English women's football for over 15 years.
