Donovan Mitchell, a Cleveland Cavaliers guard and former Louisville star, tied the NBA playoff record for points in a half against the Pistons.

Donovan Mitchell put on a show for the ages Monday night, and Louisville basketball fans couldn't be prouder. The former Cardinal star and current Cleveland Cavaliers guard erupted for 39 points in the second half against the Detroit Pistons, tying an NBA playoff record that had stood since 1987.

Mitchell finished with 43 total points, leading Cleveland to a 112-103 victory in Game 4 and evening the second-round playoff series at 2-2. His second-half explosion matched the mark set by Golden State Warriors legend Eric "Sleepy" Floyd nearly four decades ago.

The record was within reach until the very end. With 27.3 seconds left, Mitchell stepped to the free-throw line needing just one make to break the all-time record. But after sinking the first, his second shot rimmed out—leaving him tied with Floyd instead of owning the milestone outright.

What makes the performance even more remarkable? Mitchell started the game ice cold, going just 1-for-8 from the field and not scoring until the 2:48 mark of the second quarter. But like all great players, he flipped the switch when it mattered most.

This marked Mitchell's fourth 40-point playoff game with the Cavaliers, moving him past Kyrie Irving for the second-most in franchise history—trailing only LeBron James. Not bad company for a player who entered the NBA as the 13th overall pick in 2017.

Mitchell's journey from Louisville standout to NBA superstar has been nothing short of spectacular. Since being drafted by the Utah Jazz in a draft-day trade with the Denver Nuggets, he's racked up seven All-Star selections, earned All-NBA First Team honors in 2025, won the 2018 Slam Dunk Contest, and made the All-Rookie Team in 2018. This season, he's averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game.

The Cavaliers now head to Detroit for Game 5 on Wednesday, May 13, with all the momentum on their side. If Mitchell keeps putting on shows like this, Cleveland fans might be in for a long playoff run—and Louisville fans will be watching every step of the way.
