Billy Loughnane is living proof that age is just a number. The 20-year-old jockey, already nicknamed "The Kid" for his youthful brilliance, is on the verge of making history this Saturday at Newmarket. He'll ride Bow Echo, the hot favourite in the 2,000 Guineas, and a win would not only secure his first Classic victory but also make him the youngest jockey to do so since Donnacha O'Brien triumphed on Saxon Warrior in 2018 at just 19.
"It's a bit surreal really," Loughnane told the BBC. "I never thought it would be happening this early on in my career. I'm really fortunate to be able to sit on him. It's great. Quite hard to understand, really. I'm very lucky."
For the Irish-born, Midlands-raised rider, horses have been part of his DNA since his first Christmas present—a rocking horse, followed by the real thing the next year. He learned to ride at his father Mark Loughnane's training yard in Rock, near Kidderminster, and won his first race at his local track in Wolverhampton back in November 2022. Since then, it's been a meteoric rise.
In 2023, he claimed the Champion Apprentice title and became the youngest jockey since Lester Piggott in 1951 to ride in a British Classic. Last year, he shattered Kieren Fallon's long-standing record by riding 222 winners, earning him the Annual Flat Champion Jockey award. While Oisin Murphy took the British Flat Jockeys' Championship (decided by winners between May and October) with Loughnane as runner-up, the young star has his sights set even higher.
"Becoming champion jockey on the flat has been my dream since I've been able to walk and talk," Loughnane said. And with Bow Echo primed for glory, that dream is closer than ever.
