Looking back: The Vikings trade back into Round 1 in 2012 is memorable

The Minnesota Vikings had the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, but it was a trade later in the night that landed them Harrison Smith.

The 2012 NFL Draft will forever hold a special place in Minnesota Vikings history—not just for their first-round pick, but for a bold move later that night that shaped the franchise for over a decade.

Entering draft day with the third overall pick, the Vikings made a savvy trade with the Cleveland Browns, gaining extra draft capital while still landing their top target: USC tackle Matt Kalil. It was a solid start, but the real fireworks came later.

As the Baltimore Ravens approached the 29th pick, first-year general manager Rick Spielman felt a familiar draft-night urgency. He was convinced that Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith—a player he admired for both his talent and character—wouldn't last until Minnesota's second-round selection at No. 35. So Spielman made a deal: a fourth-round pick (98th overall) to the Ravens to jump back into the first round.

ESPN's Kevin Seifert later called this the most impactful draft-day trade in Vikings franchise history. And the numbers back it up.

Smith went on to become the heart of Minnesota's secondary for 14 seasons, earning six Pro Bowl selections from 2015 to 2021. He's one of only six defensive backs in NFL history to record at least 35 interceptions and 20 sacks in a career—joining Hall of Famers Charles Woodson, Larry Wilson, Ronde Barber, LeRoy Butler, and Brian Dawkins. That's elite company, and Smith's legacy in purple is cemented.

Meanwhile, Kalil made the Pro Bowl as a rookie but saw his performance decline over the next few seasons, eventually leaving as a free agent after an injury-marred 2016 campaign. The contrast highlights how one aggressive trade can change a team's trajectory.

There's even a quirky footnote to this story. Fans at the Vikings' official draft party at the Metrodome that night were told to leave the stadium just as the "trade" graphic appeared and Minnesota was on the clock. Despite pleas to let them see the pick through, the order stood. They missed the moment live—but they'd get to watch Smith's Hall of Fame-caliber career unfold for years to come.
