The Washington Commanders have added several pieces to their roster during the offseason, but one major piece still eludes Adam Peters: A star wide receiver.
The Commanders have several options at receiver as it stands, but Terry McLaurin is the only true threat perceived by other teams. Peters is in search of a receiver who can line up opposite McLaurin and take some of the attention away. This is why some draft analysts predict that the Commanders will select Carnell Tate in the first round, but the Commanders have other needs to address in the draft as well, which is why no one is certain what they will do.
Fox Sports reporter Ralph Vacchiano recently suggested an alternative option.
Acquire: WR DK Metcalf from the Pittsburgh SteelersCost: 2026 third-round pick (71st), 2027 fifth-round pick
The idea of the Steelers trading him all depends on what happens with Aaron Rodgers, and whether Pittsburgh goes for it all in 2026 or goes into a rebuilding mode. They did just trade for Michael Pittman, so their cupboard wouldn’t be bare without Metcalf. And Metcalf was a bit of a disappointment last season with just 59 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns as Rodgers struggled to find him downfield. He’d have better luck with the younger, stronger Jayden Daniels throwing him the ball. And the Commanders are desperate for a WR opposite Terry McLaurin. Metcalf cost the Steelers a second-round pick. But after a down year, and with three years and more than $100 million left on his contract, something less would do.
The Commanders are also one of the few teams capable of absorbing Metcalf's contract; he has a $31 million cap hit in 2026, and that number increases in each of the next three years.
Metcalf would definitely benefit from having Jayden Daniels as a quarterback, but if the Steelers decide to move on from Aaron Rodgers, having a veteran like Metcalf on the field is a good idea. However, if Rodgers stays with Pittsburgh and the two can't get on the same page, the Steelers might be more than happy to trade Metcalf away.
Here's the one caveat with this plan, though. Vacchiano suggests the Commanders give up their third-round draft pick in 2026. Washington only has six picks in this year's draft, and taking away that third-round pick means that after the first round, the Commanders wouldn't pick until the 5th round. That doesn't feel very good, especially given that the Commanders still have plenty of needs to fill.
This trade is extremely unlikely for many reasons. The rumor mill continues to churn that 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk wants to play for the Commanders. Why would Washington trade a premium pick, plus take on Metcalf's ridiculous contract when it can wait out Aiyuk and/or add a receiver in the draft?
In the NFL, though, nothing is ever out of the question, and nothing is ever 100% certain. Any given Sunday, right?
